🥋 10PATX Newsletter

Welcome to January 2026!

We are coming off of an incredible 10th Planet Austin Eclipse weekend that also represented our 10th anniversary. During that weekend, we saw a ton of our own get ranked up.

Coaches still have names on their list, so keep showing up to class and you might be surprised with a rank up!

December didn’t just see our people get ranked, it saw our people become WORLD CHAMPIONS at IBJJF No Gi Worlds in Las Vegas.

Our champions were Lauren Sears (brown belt), Darion Terry (brown), and Brianna Margo (blue). Each were ranked up to their next belt on the podium.

In second place we had Priscilla Hembroff (brown), Sean Kent (purple), and Sydney Gruber (purple).

Jacob Norton (brown) came in third.

We are hoping that everyone in the gym takes that momentum we built in December 2025 into the new year.

🗓️ Schedule & Logistics

Our schedule is about the same in 2026 as it was in 2025.

With 16 new black belts on the mats, be on the lookout for guest coaching spots for each of those black belts in the coming months.

Every one of those black belts has their own “A-game” or thing that they do special.

We are hoping to spotlight these teammates in the first quarter of this year.

🏆 Gym Highlights & Wins

IBJJF No Gi Worlds was an incredible weekend, as was the eclipse the next weekend.

During that Eclipse weekend, we saw Jacob Ortiz, Paul Harris, and Matt Kallaher earn wins at white belt that resulted in their being ranked up to blue belt during Thursday Night Jiu Jitsu 100.

One of the highlights of promotion night was the Ellis Bullard concert, which is when Ellis received his purple belt from Eddie Bravo, Curtis Hembroff, and Zack Moore.

He isn’t the only musician to get belted up! “Sonny” earned his 10th Planet blue belt after four and a half years of training striking and Jiu Jitsu with us.

That Saturday saw Glenn Oswald, DeShawn Moore, and Roman Sanchez earn blue belts based on their performance at White Belt Worlds. At 52-years old, Glenn cleaned out his bracket for the gold!

10th Planet Los Angeles, also known as Headquarters, which is Eddie’s gym, earned the victory in the eight-team 10th Planet Team Duels on Saturday Night. Their finals victory came over the 10th Planet Oak Hill crew led by Casey Champagne.

December was chocked full of fun, but we are glad to be back on schedule.

🎯 Training Focus / Coach’s Note

When Eddie was in Austin last month, he spoke of “Operation Half Guard,” which is an increased emphasis on the half guard in the “Perpetual Training Camp” that is his Monday through Thursday 8:45 PM advanced class at 10PHQ.

Some of this conversation started in a group chat with Eddie, Curtis Hembroff, Bryce Mitchell, and Zack Moore while watching Islam Makachev demolish Jack Della Madellena.

Despite Jack’s highly promoted time working with Craig Jones, he seemed to have no half guard game throughout the entire fight as Islam was able to just hold him there to secure one of the more dominant championship victories we’ve ever seen.

Eddie told me during the team duels at Eclipse weekend that the problem for MMA guys is that when they practice Jiu Jitsu, they use the knee shield, so that their opponent can’t get past their guard and attack their neck.

When they fight MMA, they don’t use the knee shield and instead attempt to get closer as the knee shield allows their opponent to drop bombs from the top position.

Eddie’s conclusion is that the half guard game is underutilized in not just MMA, but Jiu Jitsu, so that’s where the focus us.

Years ago, when I was a purple belt, John Danaher told me that Eddie’s half guard game is his most important contribution to Jiu Jitsu, so that’s where I started to focus years ago.

If you’ve been in Ben Eddy’s classes the first two weeks of 2026, you would have noticed he was out of town. That’s because Ben was on a traincation down the West Coast from Oregon to San Diego, spending time with Eddie in Los Angeles to receive some key details to bring back to us.

Be sure to train with Ben next week now that he’s back on his regular schedule!

To our Dearest White Belts!!

Just a tip for those who are new to Jiu Jitsu!

Don’t lose track of doing the things that keep you healthy off of the mats as you dive further into Jiu Jitsu!

We want you to train as much as you can, but we must urge you to ensure you are doing things like lifting, stretching (yoga), movement, and walking off the mat to ensure your body is primed and capable of withstanding the new requirements that you’re putting it through every week.

We want Jiu Jitsu to be something you do for the next 10-years, rather than the next 10-months, so we hope you’re able to stay healthy and make that vision a reality.

Be sure to talk to the higher belts and coaches about how they manage their training for that goal of longevity.
